The Federation congratulates the Australian public for pressuring the Abbott Government to increase the number of places for Syrian refugees. It is time also to end the shameful and cruel mandatory detention policy that results in refugees being imprisoned on Manus and Nauru.
The Federation is concerned that the Abbott Government has lobbied the USA for Australia to be involved in bombing raids across Syria. International conflict is not solved by military means. All wars are fought against children. It is humanitarian assistance that the Syrian people need, not bombs.
The Federation calls upon the Australian Government to raise further the number of Syrian refugee places available for people of all faiths and non-faith, to increase funding for humanitarian aid and to cease all military operations in the region.
