A poll of voters in the seat of Canning found that more people in the electorate oppose the China Australia Free Trade Agreement (CHaFTA) than support it.
The poll, conducted last week, found that 43 per cent of voters opposed the Agreement, and 23 per cent supported it.
The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union National has been actively talking to voters in the Canning by-election about the CHaFTA. The campaign has included a tv ad, letterboxing of every household in the electorate, two mobile billboards and railway station leaflet handouts.
CFMEU National Secretary Michael O'Connor said the poll indicated that when people were aware of the detail of CHaFTA, they opposed it.
"This poll shows that the more people know about CHaFTA, the less they like it," he said.
"CHaFTA sells out Australian workers by allowing Chinese companies to bring in semi-skilled workers for the first time, and doing away with the requirement for employers to advertise for local labour first."
