About Jim Stanford

Jim Stanford is one of Canada’s best-known economics commentators. He served for many years as Economist and Director of Policy with Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector trade union (formerly the Canadian Auto Workers), and is the Harold Innis Industry Professor in Economics at McMaster University.

He was a founding member of the economics panel (‘The Bottom Line’) on the Canadian Broadcasting Commission’s flagship television news program (The National), writes a regular column for the Globe and Mail, Canada’s major national newspaper, and is the author of Economics for Everyone: A Short Guide to the Economics of Capitalism (Pluto Books, published in six languages, 2nd edition 2015).

He and his family recently moved to Sydney, where he now heads up the Centre for Future Work in the Australia Institute. Jim has a PhD in economics, but is most well known for his ability to talk about the issues in ways that people can understand, and to relate economics to workers’ lives rather than abstract theoretical models.

‘Jim is both an economist and an educator,’ says Senator Doug Cameron. ‘He makes economic theory understandable and accessible. His speeches are funny and deeply informative.
