Election Issues: Turnbull Government has failed working Australians

ACTU Media Release: The Turnbull Government has failed working Australians.

The ACTU welcomes the official start of the 2016 election campaign as an opportunity for all Australians to determine the course our country will take as we transition from the mining boom and look toward the next era for the people of Australia.

Whoever is elected must prioritise the things which working Australians most value and most need; local jobs, investments in education and healthcare, and a plan to build a stronger economy that improves the living standards of people in this country.

The next federal government must invest in the educational outcomes, the skills training and ultimately the new industries that will provide jobs for the more than 700 thousand people currently looking for them, and bring our economy into the 21st century.

Cutting corporate taxes and crossing your fingers isn’t a plan. We need a government that will be proactive and encourage new industries and new secure well paid jobs.

The Turnbull Liberal government has failed to take Australia in the right direction and we will be urging people to put the Liberal/National parties last in this election.

Quotes Attributable to ACTU President Ged Kearney:

  • “Australians deserve a government that will put their interests first, create jobs and fund health and education with revenue from a fair and equitable tax system.”
  • “This election offers Australians a chance to choose a government that understands the lives of working people and will govern in their best interests”
  • “The next federal government must support Australian job growth by putting money into education, traineeships, apprenticeships and research and development of new technologies.”
  • “From our constant engagement with local communities around Australia, we know that this election will be won by the party that can deliver funding for local schools and hospitals and local jobs that people so desperately want.”
  • “We need a government who understands that fairness and growth are not separate concepts, but rather complementary objectives.”
  • “The Australian Union movement has built a nation wide campaign on these issues. We have mobilized tens of thousands of people, young, old, working, retired, men and women. We are ready. Across Australia people are telling us that they are disappointed in Malcom Turnbull and angry at the Liberal party. We are saying Put the Liberals Last this election.”
