CPSU: ATO Staff – 71.5% Vote No Again

ATO STAFF REJECT GOVERNMENT BARGAINING POLICY
MAY 05, 2016

Australian Taxation Office staff have once again emphatically rejected the Government’s failed public sector bargaining policy, with 71.5% voting No to a harsh and unreasonable proposed enterprise agreement.

The strong result is the second No vote by ATO staff during the current round of negotiations, following the 85% No vote recorded in December last year. There was a high participation rate of 85% for both ballots.

Tax Office Commissioner Chris Jordan has indicated the next steps in negotiation remain uncertain because of the looming federal election.

CPSU National Secretary Nadine Flood said: “Tax Office staff have dealt another body blow to the debacle that is the Government’s bargaining policy. That’s two strong No votes in major agencies in two days, adding to the clear message sent by civilian staff in Defence on Wednesday.”

“ATO management pushed incredibly hard for staff to accept the harsh and unreasonable offer they put on the table. This result makes it crystal clear that our members won’t settle for anything less than a fair deal that protects their rights and conditions while granting a decent pay rise to compensate them for two long years of negotiations.”

“By  voting No, Tax Office staff have kept many important rights and conditions the department was seeking to strip, including family-friendly provisions that allow people to do their important tax work while still meeting their parenting and other responsibilities at home.”

“Workers in Tax and Defence who’ve rejected these dud deals have told us they’re looking forward to soon voting on a bigger stage in the federal election, along with tens of thousands of people working across the public sector. They’ve rejected these unreasonable agreements and soon they’ll have their chance to reject the Turnbull Government and its ideologically driven attacks on public sector workers and the essential services they provide.”

“The Government underlined its contemptuous attitude to the public sector this week with a Budget that arbitrarily strips another $1.9 billion from departments, meaning another 3,000 to 4,500 jobs will be cut on top of the 18,000 who have been slashed under the Coalition.”
