Patron Eva Cox Stands with Millers Point Community
Residents battling the destruction of their community at Millers Point have welcomed the prominent humanist and public housing champion, Eva Cox, as a patron to stand alongside existing patron Jack Mundey.
Eva Cox is known across Australia for her advocacy for feminist causes and the rights of the underprivileged, being awarded Australian Humanist of the Year in 1997 and receiving the Order of Australia for her services to women and welfare.
Eva Cox is seriously concerned that moving long-term tenants out of Millers Point could literally be fatal. “We have known, but too often ignore, the importance of social capital, the feelings of belonging and trust that link good community members. Another residence, without these links to place and neighbours, will create serious feelings of loss and grief that affect people's health.”
Kelli Haynes, Convenor of the Friends of Millers Point says Eva Cox’s longstanding involvement in the rights of tenants in The Rocks gives her patronage of the current campaign to save the Millers Point community a special significance.
“Eva’s involvement in tenant activism in our community pre-dates the famed Green Bans of the 1970s, led by the Builders Labourers Federation under Jack Mundey. She became involved, initially through her involvement in Urban Studies at the University of New South Wales.”
“She became involved in what was then the Rocks Residents Group. She worked alongside tenants whose families had been in the area for generations and helped see off the big developers who were planning to send in the bulldozers. The values of the close-knit working class community got under her skin at that time.”
“We’ve regarded her as one of us ever since.”
“Now, at this most difficult time for our community, we need her skills and the profile she can offer our campaign more than ever.”
“With Eva Cox on our side, we now call on the government to pause the process of ‘relocating’ tenants away from Millers Point. The community has provided the government with options to sell the more valuable houses in Millers Point while saving the modest workers flats and the Sirius building. This single action of pausing the relocation process could be the beginning of saving this community while still providing the government with all the funds they expected from the sale of the entire public housing stock of Millers Point, Dawes Point and The Rocks.”
