Blue Mountains City Council – NAIDOC Week Celebrations 5 to 12 July

To celebrate National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration (NAIDOC) in the Mountains Blue Mountains City Council, the Blue Mountains City Council’s Aboriginal Advisory Council together with the Blue Mountains NAIDOC Committee are hosting a range of events from 5 to 12 July.


NAIDOC week is celebrated annually throughout Australia and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and recognises the contribution they make within the community. Each year NAIDOC week focuses on a theme, this year the theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee is, We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate.

ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER COMMUNITY DAY IN THE GULLY
Monday 6 July 2015, 11.30 - 2.30pm
Katoomba Falls Reserve, Cliff Drive Katoomba (Katoomba Aquatic Centre in case of bad weather)
The Blue Mountains City Council Aboriginal Advisory Council invites the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to lunch and activities in the Katoomba Falls section of the Gully. Transport will run from the Commuter Car Park Katoomba Station to the Gully - Katoomba Falls Reserve from 11.20am.

BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE - 2015 NAIDOC EXHIBITION
6 – 26 July 2015 - Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, 30 Parke St Katoomba
Supported by the BMCC Aboriginal Advisory Council this year’s NAIDOC exhibition, featuring the work of two local Aboriginal artists. On Saturday 11 July, 11am - 4pm there will be a free Aboriginal community day to celebrate NAIDOC at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and in the Aboriginal Community NAIDOC Art Exhibition.

ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY NAIDOC ART EXHIBITION
9 – 19 July 2015 - Katoomba Leura Community Centre, 81-83 Katoomba St, Katoomba
This exhibition supported by the Aboriginal Culture and Resource Centre (ACRC) and the  BMCC Aboriginal Advisory Council, displays and sells the work of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander professional and emerging artists. The exhibition officially opens Saturday 11 July, from 2.30pm. For information on exhibiting your work contact ACRC 4782 6569.

BLUE MOUNTAINS CITY LIBRARY
To celebrate NAIDOC the Katoomba Branch Library, has a select display of Aboriginal cultural materials with stories connected to the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
A talk will be held on these materials, Saturday 11 July, 1.45pm at the Katoomba Branch.
There will also be a NAIDOC inspired ‘Story time’ at Springwood Branch on Thursday 16 July, 10.30am.
