Right to Home Launch – 2 December 2016

75 per cent of low income households are experiencing rental stress and over 28,000 people experiencing homelessness in New South Wales. Increasingly, teachers, childcare professionals, nurses and other workers who provide essential services to the community struggle to find affordable accommodation close to work. While thousands of new units are being built for high income earners in areas close to transport and jobs, lower to middle income earners are being left out.

Right to Home calls on the NSW Legislative Assembly to immediately introduce legislation to amend the Planning and Environment Act to require that a percentage of all new residential developments – at least 15% – be set aside for affordable housing. If we get 10,000 signatures, the Parliament will have to discuss our proposal.

We invite you to join us for the launch of the Right to Home campaign across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. You will hear from services, housing providers, and local community members about why this issue is so important, and learn how you can take action. This will be followed by morning tea and networking opportunities.

Please do feel free to share this through your networks–it’d be great to get as many people as possible along to the event!
