Liberals and Nats Vote to sell off our ABC.

This weekend, the Liberal Party’s peak national decision making body has voted to sell off the ABC.

That’s right. The Liberal national council in Sydney voted 2:1 to privatise the ABC.

We can stop this, but we need everyone to join the fight now.

The ABC has never been under greater attack in its long and storied history than it is now. Almost $340 million has been cut from its base funding since 2014. Programs have been axed, locally produced drama is way down, foreign bureaux have been closed and hundreds of years of journalistic experience has been lost. ABC journalists simply doing their job are attacked on an almost daily basis by Coalition politicians.

And now the Liberal Party wants to sell the ABC.

By contrast, Bill Shorten’s Labor pledged this week to reverse the most recent $84 million funding cut announced in last month’s Budget. It’s not enough, but it’s a good step in the right direction.

Next month, MEAA will be joining ABC Friends in hosting Save The ABC rallies in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. We’ll send you more details soon.

In the meantime, we need everyone to join this fight and to send a strong message to Communications Minister Mitch Fifield: hands off our ABC!

If you’ve already sent your own message, share the link among everyone you know because it will be people power that wins this fight.
