Election 2016: Local issues behind win in NSW seat of Macquarie, Labor's Susan Templeman says
Swings of up to 10 per cent recorded across Sydney's westLabor predicted to take three seats in region from Liberals
Polls failed to predict size of Labor swing in Macarthur
The ALP looks to have taken at least three seats from the Liberals in the city's west and Blue Mountains, while in half-a-dozen more seats Labor looks to have strengthened its position with swings of up to 10 per cent
On Sunday morning, former journalist Susan Templeman was warmly congratulated by locals on the main street of Springwood after taking Macquarie from the Liberals.
The seat takes in the Blue Mountains and parts of Sydney, including Richmond.
Ms Templeman, who has run for the seat three times, said she believed campaigning on local issues like the proposed western Sydney airport and a controversial road project in the Hawkesbury resonated with voters.
"This electorate's got two very separate areas," she said.
"One area cares a lot about the western Sydney airport and concerns [that] it's going to have detrimental effects on a sensitive World Heritage area.
"The other side of the electorate wants to see its traffic problems fixed.
"I think people expect their local member to be fighting for them."
