Medicare and votes

When it comes to Medicare, half the electorate believes that while the Prime Minister has put his hand on his heart and vowed not to privatise Medicare, the Liberals will do exactly that if re-elected.

Why does the public believe it is true? Labor owns the Medicare and public health brand; they've witnessed the attacks on bulk billing from the Liberals and may even remember the plan to privatise parts of the network floated over the past few years.

More fundamentally they see the impact of the Medicare freeze on their local GPs, some of whom are being forced into high-volume corporate bulk-billing practices or into charging top-up fees.
So lived experience and party brand trumps a politician's solemn promises.
