GetUp ! has released this quick update whilst the final election result is still being determined - because wherever things land, one thing is clear. Together, we had a massive impact on the hard-right of Parliament.
For months, GetUp members have been fighting full force against the right-wing blockers, who are holding us back on renewable energy and dismantling our world-class health system.
Out of the 12 seats lost by the Government so far, eight were held by right-wing blockers who held us back on key issues like climate action and funding for our schools and hospitals.
That includes Tony Abbott supporter Andrew Nikolic in Tasmania, who lost with a gigantic swing of 10.4% that no-one saw coming. And Immigration Minister Peter Dutton's seat of Dickson is still hanging in the balance, with a 5.9% swing against him (that's twice the state average).
Why? Because GetUp volunteers had 27,000 conversations with voters in these electorates. Together, we connected swing voters to GetUp members for heartfelt, one-on-one conversations about the issues that matter most -- from the urgency of investing in renewable energy, to desperately needed health and hospital funding. And GetUp members helped fund the ad campaigns that drove these messages home.
What we did together is about much more than impacting on one election result. It's about building our power. The parties now know that by acting together, we have the power to cost them their place in our parliament.
There'll be much more news in the days ahead, and much more to do. But we'll be ready. And we've never been stronger.
