Unions NSW: International Women’s Day – Join the Sydney March on 12 March

Nine women have been killed by violence in Australia in the last two months. Even one is too many. The time for inaction is over.
This is a cause too important to ignore. By the end of today - like every other day in NSW - 80 domestic violence assaults will occur.
That’s 80 mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties, friends attacked by a hand that they trust.
And this shocking statistic is only getting worse. Over the past five years violence against women has increased by 2%. And our governments are doing NOTHING to stem the flow of abuse.
In actual fact they are cutting much needed funding from domestic violence services. On a federal level Tony Abbott slashed $300 million from family violence services, and while Malcolm Turnbull has pledged $100 million, it will do nothing to make up for the massive shortfall already there.
In NSW, there aren’t enough resources dedicated to assisting women and children, every second woman who reaches out for help at a women’s refuge is being turned away.
It’s time our governments got serious about ending family violence and stepped up to the challenge of providing the funding for the services that are so desperately in need.
Join us on Saturday 12 March @ 11.30am, Archibald Fountain, Hyde Park North and stand in solidarity with your sisters who are suffering as we speak.
It’s all about strength in numbers so bring your friends, your sisters and your brothers. RSVP now and help spread the word. Let’s tell the powers that be that we won’t wait. The time to end violence against women is NOW.
In union,
Emma Maiden
Assistant Secretary
Unions NSW
PS: The Australian Services Union has been making strides in the fight against domestic violence and you can too. Sign the petition http://www.asumembers.org.au/wewontwait calling on the government to provide more funding for women’s services.
