Educators from across Australia have voiced their support for the Safe Schools Coalition Australia program, as a review is conducted into the program.
More than 360 academics from across Australia have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull expressing their support and backing for Safe Schools Coalition Australia.
"The Program is a direct response to Australian research showing that same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse young people are subject to high levels of homophobic and transphobic bullying and abuse at school. These experiences are linked with poorer mental health and wellbeing outcomes," the letter says.
"This program is important in responding to the specific needs of same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse young people in schools. It is also important in creating more inclusive, supportive and safe schools where all young people can meet their education potential," it also reads.
Schools have also openly voiced their support, for example:
"Albury High School has put its support behind the Safe Schools Coalition in the wake of a federal government review into the LGBTI support program," the Border Mail reported on March 1.
Trafalgar High School acting principal John Freyne told the La Trobe Valley Express the program was beneficial to its students alongside a "variety of health and wellbeing teaching material from a range of sources".
Overnewton Anglican Community College principal Jim Laussen wrote for The Drum:
The program has provided us with the practical ideas and staff support to make our school safe and inclusive for all: not just students, but their families and teachers too.
Earlier this month, the Australian Education Union (South Australia) signed on as a supporting organisation of the Safe Schools Coalition.
University of Western Australia Emeritus Professor of Education Bill Louden's review report by is due to be submitted to federal Department of Education and Training by March 11.
The review, called by the Federal Government, is looking at the "appropriateness and efficacy" of the program's resources provided to schools.
In response to the review Megaphone.org.au is running a petition titled: "Support the Safe Schools Program — no review needed!"
A public rally, Stand up for Safe Schools, will be held on Saturday March 12 at Sydney Town Hall from 2pm. Visit the Community Action Against Homophobia Facebook page for more details.
