A mass meeting of around 1,000 CPSU members is being held in Newcastle today and will include workers from the ATO, Defence, CSIRO and Centrelink.
Up to 1,000 Hunter public sector workers are kicking off a week of industrial action today, over what they say is the Federal government's plans to take away their rights.
A mass meeting is being held in Newcastle that will include workers from the ATO, Defence, CSIRO and Centrelink.
They are fighting against the Abbott government's attempt to slash workplace rights, pay and conditions.
Community and Public Sector Union National Secretary Nadine Flood said walking off the job is the only choice.
"After more than a year, the government is still refusing to sit down and negotiate with the union like most other sensible employers do," she said.
"What they're actually offering is pay cuts for thousands of workers."
The workers say the Abbott government is trying to force 'draconian' workplace terms on employees.
Ms Flood said the workers have stepped up their action because the government's refused to negotiate.
"The government has slashed over 17,000 public sector jobs, so people are under real pressure," she said.
"And now it's coming after the rights, conditions and take home pay of people who work in the Commonwealth public sector."
