Unions NSW: Education is a right, not a revenue stream

From Mark Lennon - Unions NSW Secretary

Our unis and TAFE system provide an important pathway to skills and employment for young people, while also providing ongoing opportunities for people to re‐skill and gain new qualifications throughout their working lives. So whether you live in a city or the country, whether you’re just starting out or starting over, our tertiary education system is a source of opportunity for all Australians — but the system is under attack from the Abbott & Baird Governments.

Since last May the Abbott Government has been seeking a 20% cut in university funding and working to deregulate uni fees, which could lead to student debt comparable to a mortgage before even starting a career! And his mate Premier Baird is making a bad situation worse: The Baird government’s has already stripped $130 million from the NSW TAFE state Budget, sacked 1200 TAFE teachers and proposed a significant rise in student fees and debt.

Education is the key to a good career and bright future — but it’s a future we need to fight for here in NSW.

Sign the petition and tell Premier Baird: stop TAFE cuts

As if education cuts and mass sackings aren’t enough, students and staff are facing new challenges this new year. As of 1 January, 40% of students will face fee hikes of more than $500. And NSW’s 10 TAFE institutes must now compete with 330 private training companies for state government funding for the first time. Funding will depend on the number of students enrolled — so TAFE's survival depends on drumming up business.

It’s time the Prime Minister Tony Abbott & Premier Baird understand education is a right, not a revenue stream. Add your name to more than 13,000 other Australians demanding that education in our state remain a public good rather than a source of profit for private business.
