Qld: Nurses campaign to stop Kingaroy closure

The Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) says a State Government-owned nursing home at Kingaroy in the state's South Burnett region is to be shut.

QNU spokeswoman Beth Mohle says Farrhome Nursing Care Unit will close in June 2014 removing another 16 high-care aged places, displacing 14 residents and about 30 nurses.

Ms Mohle says it is the latest state-owned nursing home to close.

She says a community rally was held at Sandgate on Saturday to try to stop the closure of two houses at Eventide on Brisbane's bayside.

"I just think we will change their minds by the weight of community opinion," she said.

"What is not appreciated here - and I'll say it until I'm blue in the face is that these are people's homes - they're not just bricks and mortar.

"These elderly people have moved there for their final years of their lives and this is incredibly distressing."
