NSW: Gosford votes against Coal Seam Gas

New Greens Gosford councillor Hillary Morris had a huge win at her first meeting on Tuesday night with councillors getting behind her motion to oppose the practice.

Cr Morris said she was "very pleased" that a majority of councillors supported her motion. The council seek support for its stance from local MPs and Wyong Council.

"Opposing the practice of coal seam gas exploration and mining is vital for the protection of our water supply and our agricultural lands," she said.

"We all know that our rivers are vitally important to our drinking water supply and this practice has been shown elsewhere in Australian and overseas to lead to contaminated water which kills crops."

Independent councillor Craig Doyle, who seconded the motion, said the council had a history of forming policies on matters which were actually in the hands of the state government.

"If things change, our policy can be reviewed, but as these mining practices stand at the moment, we need to take a firm stand against them," Cr Doyle said.

An amendment from Liberal councillor Jeff Strickson to delay a decision until a study on coal seam gas extraction was completed by the state government in a couple of years was defeated.
