Vic: Baillieu anti-union codes bypassed

Federal Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten has moved to prevent the Baillieu government's attacks on building unions by introducing changes that are designed to override the state's regime.

The changes were released on Wednesday - a few hours after the Gillard government announced an election date.

Under the changes, which take effect on Friday, the new federal code for the building industry says it will prevent state and territory governments from being able to require builders to change workplace agreements or practices if they want work.

The Baillieu state code allows the government to ban builders from bidding for government-funded work for signing union-friendly deals. It recently banned Lend Lease after it signed a deal with a union that placed limits on the use of outside labour and also allowed traditional union flags be flown.

A spokesman for Mr Shorten said its code ''clearly sets out the rules and expectations applying to those working on Commonwealth-funded building work''.
