At an ALP meeting in the Hunter yesterday, the Treasurer, Michael Costa, tried to convince hundreds of party members to support electricity privatisation.

The president of the party's Cessnock branch, Bob Pynsent, said that while the meeting had remained civil, the Treasurer's case for change was unconvincing.

A worker from the Vales Point power station, Gary Redmond, of the Central Coast, who protested outside the meeting, said the Government had not consulted the community about the privatisation.

The reason why party members and the public don't trust Mr Costa and Mr Iemma on privatisation is that it just doesn't deliver the benefits to the public that they claim. The management consultant Peter Fitzgerald was hired by the Victorian Government to investigate 8 previous attempts to use private capital for public projects. He found that none of them gave any benefit to the public. Of course the shareholders of the big investing companies get a benefit. Of course there are some good cooshy jobs after retirement for the politicians who organize the sell-offs. Good for corruption but not good for the public. Ted
